Representing the country and winning medals is something to be proud about. The athletes who achieve this know it. Most of the fans sure do. But what about our rulers? They think it's best appreciated with a small (real, real small) token and a reprimand.Police constable Anita, 35, from Agra recently won medals for India at an international meet in Malaysia. That no major newspaper or channel lauded this is another matter. But even the police department where she works decided it wasn't worth more than Rs 400. Yes, that's the 'appreciation' she received. And also a one-liner from her boss saying, "You have already had such a long outing and rest. Get back to work."
Sad state of affairs, isn't it?
We will hazard a guess and say her boss is a potbellied corrupt cop whose daily exercise routine includes lifting food and claim to fame is perhaps a bribery (or worse) case against him! In fact, Anita herself admits that the "poor efficiency and performance levels of the police are due to lack of interest in sports." No wonder athletes aren't queuing up to compete for India.
For what it's worth, we appreciate what she has achieved. And a pox on you, you ungrateful boss!
